It’s funny. Whenever we think of technology in the meetings and events industry, we tend to think of internet browsers, social media, and online registration. It is easy to forget that the technology that powers our industry is wide reaching and touches every corner of what we do. Case in point is what is announced in the following press release.
The Tampa Convention Center became an Energy Star Partner because of technology, not in spite of it. Bravo to them.
If we as an industry want to become part of the solution and not part of the problem, we need to start using the venues and centers that are working hard to lessen their impact on the environment.
Dedicated to Promoting Energy Efficiency and Protecting the Enviroment
TAMPA, Fla. (June 6, 2013) – The waterfront Tampa Convention Center (TCC) in downtown Tampa, Fla. has been approved as an ENERGY STAR PARTNER. Joining more than 15,000 organizations that have partnered with ENERGY STAR, TCC is dedicated to improving and promoting energy efficiency within the four-level, 600,000-square-foot convention center. The center is ranked in the 84th percentile of efficiency when compared to other buildings of similar size and type of operation.
“The ENERGY STAR partnership is a result of our ongoing commitment to the environment,” said Eric Blanc, CMP, Director of Sales, Marketing, and Convention Services at Tampa Convention Center. “Our team has initiated a number of green initiatives, from recycling to reducing waste, and this new partnership will allow us to take our energy efficiency to new heights.”
ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy that encourages companies to protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices. As part of the partnership, TCC will measure and track their energy performance, create and implement an energy management plan, and support the ENERGY STAR Challenge, a national call-to-action for commercial and industrial buildings to improve their energy efficiency by 10 percent or more.
In addition to joining the ENERGY STAR program, TCC is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council and has taken the first steps in becoming LEED certified. Additionally, the convention center features sensor-activated light fixtures in restrooms and nine acres of energy-star-rated reflective roof covering, reducing heat load up to 15 percent. They also recycle annually more than 1,000 cubic yards of aluminum, plastic and mixed-paper products.
